How to write or update your Will

With a local solicitor 

If you would prefer to make or amend your Will through a local solicitor, all you need to do is arrange and appointment and once there, tell them you'd like to leave a gift to Trinity and provide our details:

At Trinity we understand the importance of having a Will, that’s why we’ve partnered with expert will writers, Octopus Legacy. They've taken the headache out of Will writing with a quick and easy online service where each will is checked over by a legal expert.

2025 Will Month

Every year we give our supporters the chance to make a Will for free, through our Will Month. This year's Will Month will be taking place in May.

We've teamed up with a selection of local solicitors who kindly agreed to waive their usual fees; instead donating their time and expertise in return for a donation to our hospice.

Anne and Pete's Story

My mum and dad, Anne and Peter Worthington, were married for 48 years and settling into retirement with their scotty dog when Mum became ill with terminal cancer in 2008.

She was cared for at Trinity Hospice but was able to be at home in the last few days before she passed away. It was a tragic time losing Mum so quickly and the family was devastated.

Dad was a proud ex-serviceman serving 22 years in the RAF and worked all over the world. He was a widower for 16 years and had a loving close family around him including two great grandchildren who affectionately called him GG. He passed away peacefully in his sleep on 6th January 2024 and is finally at rest with his beloved wife.

Dad always remembered and appreciated the support from Trinity and left a gift in his Will because of that. 

FAQs

A Will is a very important document that ensures those you care about are provided for after your death. Without a valid Will, a person’s is said to be ‘intestate’ and that can mean the specific wishes you may have for your family or loved ones are not carried out.

Each gift is special to us and ensures that we’re able to provide the very best care and support to those in need today and into the future.

- A specific gift

This type of gift is usually something like property or a specific item, such as an antique or piece of jewellery.

- A gift in trust or ‘life interest’

If you like, you can leave a gift for use over a specific period of time. After that time has passed, the gift could then be passed on to other recipients, such as a charity.

- A cash gift or ‘pecuniary gift’

This is when you leave a beneficiary an exact sum of money.

- A share of your estate or ‘residuary’ gift

After you’ve provided for your loved ones and taxes have been paid, you could leave a share, or the remainder of your estate, to Trinity Hospice. This means that your estate is passed on to those you care about as well as supporting hospice care into the future.

An experienced solicitor can ensure that your Will is valid; they can also help you make any changes you might wish to make to an existing Will. 

If you are named as the Executor of someone's Will, it means you are responsible for ensuring last wishes are carried out.

Your beneficiaries will need to pay Inheritance Tax if your estate is over a certain value; in this case, 40% will be taken from the portion of your estate that is over the threshold. Gifts to charities are exempt from Inheritance Tax and the value of your estate is calculated after the value of gifts like charity donations are deducted.
