CASCADE supports children and young people aged 5 – 18 who are bereaved due to a non-curative or life-limiting illness, or are living with or helping to care for someone with a non-curative or life-limiting illness which is not responding to medical treatment.

One-to-one counselling sessions are available and there is also a therapeutic bereavement group which runs three times a year for six weeks. This group provides peer support and friendship alongside the therapeutic work.

After referral to CASCADE a telephone consultation is held with the child’s parent/carer, then followed by an assessment appointment with the child. With the help of our Children’s Therapy Co-ordinator the child can decide what sort of support they want. CASCADE offers up to six sessions, with provision to add further sessions if appropriate.

CASCADE also gives training and support to professionals, parents and carers who are helping children and young people work through their grief.

If you are a parent or carer wishing to refer a child or young person to the CASCADE counselling service at the Linden Centre, please ring us on 01253 952582.

Schools Link

This is a unique service offering support to primary and secondary schools in Blackpool Fylde and Wyre. We provide training and guidance around bereavement and significant loss – because some children and young people find it difficult to cope with life’s hard knocks.

The service offers:

  • Specialist training for school staff
  • Support for parents
  • One-to-one counselling
  • Group programmes on resilience, understanding anger, transition from primary to secondary school, and bespoke programmes to meet individual needs

School gives many children a feeling of stability at a time when home life may be almost unbearable. We know that many children and young people who have suffered significant loss will confide in a trusted teacher at school, rather than a family member.

Our research shows that Schools Link has helped keep children and young people in education when they might otherwise drop out for a while, because the pressures and upset at home are just too great.
