Michael is our hero
He’s an inspiration to us all! That was the verdict when 15 year old Michael Willacy was awarded the ‘Bravest Youngster’ title at a glittering Radio Wave awards ceremony.
Michael, who lives in Blackpool, spends a day a week at Brian House Children’s Hospice after being struck down by a rare illness on holiday abroad. The condition has left Michael with limited movement down one side of his body, but despite that he is still studying for his GCSEs, still watches Blackpool FC regularly and is without doubt one of the biggest personalities at Brian House.
He was nominated for the award by Brian House play worker Sue Pelling, who with Sister Carol Wylde joined Michael and his family at the Heroes in the Community ceremony, which was held at the De Vere hotel.
Sue said: “Michael is an inspiration. He shows such courage and determination and is an absolute pleasure to be with. His life has been turned upside down but he has coped incredibly well.
“To be at the awards ceremony with Michael and his lovely family was a wonderful and very emotional event. He was given a standing ovation as he went to receive his trophy and we were all in tears, we were so proud of him.”
