Could you be a Hospice Neighbour?
Serious illness can cause social isolation – but Trinity’s Hospice Neighbours provide a vital link for patients and their families. Could you join our team of volunteer ‘good neighbours’ in 2017 and help a patient with the small everyday tasks which make such a difference?
Our Hospice Neighbours provide an important source of support and friendship, visiting patients in their own homes across the Fylde Coast. We try and match a patient with a volunteer whose company they will enjoy, and who may have similar interests. It’s a win-win, and a fantastic way to support Trinity’s work in the community.
Hospice Neighbours provide companionship and a listening ear; they sometimes take the patient shopping, to the library or for a walk, and might accompany them to the doctor or a hospital appointment. They encourage those who are socially isolated to attend local activities or groups and give valuable respite for their carer if required. Practical help might include walking the dog or mowing the lawn: little things that make a very big difference to someone who is poorly.
The most important qualification for a Hospice Neighbour is good communication skills, but they must also understand the need for confidentiality and be caring, trustworthy and non-judgmental.
