Complementary Therapies

at Trinity Hospice

At Trinity, we understand that serious illness can bring not only physical symptoms but also emotional and mental strain. That’s why we offer a range of complementary therapies designed to support wellbeing, ease discomfort, and promote relaxation.

These therapies can help:

  • Reduce tension and anxiety
  • Improve sleep quality
  • Alleviate pain and other symptoms
  • Enhance overall sense of calm and wellbeing

Each year, around 2,000 patients benefit from complementary therapy at Trinity Hospice — a vital part of our holistic approach to care that many people don’t realise is available.

Our therapies are delivered alongside conventional medical treatments and are tailored to each individual’s needs. Most of our therapists are dedicated volunteers, all of whom are highly qualified and experienced.

Whether it’s massage, aromatherapy, reflexology or another gentle therapy, there’s something for everyone — and every session is designed to bring comfort, peace, and a moment of calm.

Our therapies include:

  • Massage – Gentle stroking movements, with or without oils, help promote relaxation and ease muscle tension.
  • Touch Therapies – Similar to massage, these gentle techniques are performed over clothing or under a blanket to create a deep sense of calm.
  • Aromatherapy – The use of essential oils from plants to support emotional and physical wellbeing.
  • Reiki – A gentle energy-based therapy where the therapist uses their hands to channel positive energy, helping reduce stress and promote healing.
  • Reflexology – Gentle pressure applied to specific points on the feet that correspond to different organs and systems in the body, helping restore balance and energy flow.
  • Bach Flower Remedies – Natural remedies taken as drops to help ease emotional distress, such as anxiety, fear, or sadness.
  • Relaxation Techniques – Patients can learn simple, effective methods to manage stress, anxiety, and sleeplessness, either one-to-one or in group sessions.

All our therapists are highly qualified and experienced, and many generously volunteer their time to support our patients.

Support for Loved Ones

We understand that spending long hours at the bedside of someone you care about can be emotionally and physically exhausting. That’s why we offer “time out” one-off complementary therapy sessions to loved ones visiting patients on our Inpatient Unit.

These gentle therapies are designed to provide a moment of calm, helping to ease stress and tension during what can be an incredibly difficult time. Whether it’s a short massage, relaxation session, or another soothing treatment, this small act of care can make a big difference.

Our aim is to support not just our patients, but also the people who love and care for them.

Who can use Trinity’s complementary therapies?

Complementary therapies are available to patients who are receiving care through any of our services at Trinity Hospice. Treatments can be provided in the comfort of a patient’s room on the Inpatient Unit, or in our dedicated therapy space.

Once a referral is made, our Complementary Therapy Co-ordinator will arrange an initial assessment to explore which therapies may be most beneficial. A personalised treatment plan will then be created, with an agreed number of sessions — all provided free of charge.

Appointments are available Monday to Thursday, between 8.30am and 5.00pm and Friday mornings until 12pm. While we kindly ask patients to arrange their own transport where possible, we do have a team of volunteer drivers who may be able to assist if needed.
