Hospice CEO pens world cup song in aid of children’s hospice charities
The Scottish Chief Executive of Brian House Children’s Hospice is hoping the Tartan Army will back his world cup anthem, cheering on Team Scotland and raising vital funds for children’s hospice care in Blackpool and across Scotland.
The 1-0 defeat to Morocco was a close call, but Scotland’s World Cup story is far from over and David Houston is releasing his track Funny How Scotland Won Every World Cup (When We Were Young) on Spotify, where the more people streaming will mean donation for Brian House and Children’s Hospices Across Scotland (CHAS).

With original lyrics, David’s anthem captures the nostalgia, humour and unshakable optimism that define generations of Scotland fans.
Drawing on his own childhood memories, David, who is a keen poet, recalls long summer evenings playing football in local parks and back streets, using jumpers for goalposts and imagining Scotland winning the World Cup. The song captures that uniquely Scottish mix of optimism, friendship and imagination that many fans remember from growing up.
But for many supporters, the song is less about football results and more about childhood memories, friendship and the dreams shared by a generations of young children. Something which resonates whatever team you support.
Inspired by iconic football moments such as Archie Gemmill’s famous 1978 World Cup goal, the song reflects a shared cultural memory of hope, humour and resilience.
David says: “This song is really about growing up as a Scot. That sense of belief you have as a child, when anything feels possible. Even if Scotland didn’t win the World Cup, in our minds, we did.”
Behind the humour is a serious message of the financial struggles faced by children’s hospices across the UK. And during Children’s Hospice Week, he’s hoping that this song which has become close to his heart, will do a great deal of good for children with life-limiting illness and their families on the Fylde coast and across Scotland.
David added: “Here at Brian House, we are in the terrible position of being the second-least funded children’s hospice in the UK. We receive just 11% of dedicated funding for Brian House from the state.
“It’s a bleak picture for all children’s hospices at the moment, so I really hope that as well as a smile, this song raises some vital funds for two very worthwhile causes.
“Football brings people together like nothing else. If we can capture even a fraction of that energy and turn it into support for children’s hospices, it could make a real difference. You don’t have to run a marathon or take on a challenge. Just press play.
“Every listen helps support the children and families who need us.”
Children’s Hospices Across Scotland (CHAS) Chief Executive Rami Okasha said: “There won’t be many people who have managed to avoid World Cup fever this past few weeks, so what an incredible gesture from David to turn that nostalgia and excitement into a wonderful fundraising effort for both Brian House and CHAS.
“The song is an embodiment of how the World Cup brings people together, and we are hugely grateful to David for bringing together his personal and professional life to shine a light on the work in children’s hospices across the UK, particularly during Children’s Hospice Week.”
