Blackpool Glow Walk sees 2,000 people raise £50,000 for Trinity Hospice
Hundreds of people walked along Blackpool’s Promenade – under the world-famous illuminations – at the weekend in memory of loved ones with Blackpool Glow Walk, raising a massive £50,000 for local hospice care.
The event had been postponed from the week before as Storm Amy rolled in, but organisers Trinity Hospice worked with event partners to ensure this year’s walk could still go ahead.
And more than 2,000 people joined together on the resort’s Comedy Carpet to remember loved ones and walk either 2.5 or five miles in their memory. Each was asked to raise sponsorship or make a donation for taking part in the free event, ensuring Trinity Hospice can continue to care for and support local people.
The event began with a touching tribute to the people participants were remembering, and a chance for them to write a personal message to them on the Glow Walk Memory Walk.
They then set off from the Tower Festival Headlands, walking north towards Red Bank Road. Participants could turn back at Gynn Square for the shorter route, or continue to the end of the illuminations for the full five miles.
At the finish line, they were treated to a well-earned medal.
Due to the event, which is formerly known as Blackpool Memory Walk, being postponed, participants had the option to complete the walk virtually.
Event Manager, Kayleigh Penn, said: “It’s always a hard decision to move or cancel our events, but Storm Amy meant it was unsafe to go ahead on the day we had originally planned Blackpool Glow Walk.
“Changing it from a Saturday night to a Friday night allowed for all of our event partners – the people who make this walk possible – to be part of Blackpool Glow Walk, and we’re thrilled that the majority of people who had signed up were still able to join us.
“It’s wonderful that those who were unable to come on Friday are still completing their walk virtually – walking in their own time in a place that is meaningful to them – in support of local hospice care.“We’re thrilled that this event has raised so much, allowing Trinity to continue
to provide its exceptional care and support to people across the Fylde coast. It’s especially meaningful to us as Trinity celebrates 40 years of care in Blackpool, Fylde and Wyre.
“Thank you to everyone who joined us, either in person or virtually, to our event partners and our participants who raised or donated so much, and to the wonderful volunteers who helped us on the night, making Blackpool Glow Walk the success it was.”
The hospice’s next event is Blackpool Santa Dash – the only way to kick off the festive season with a two mile run, jog or walk, dressed as Santa and raising money for Trinity’s dedicated children’s hospice, Brian House. Find out more at www.blackpoolsantadash.co.uk
