Over at Gruntys Day Care all the staff and children dressed up as superheroes and princesses and the staff stayed late at work baking cakes to sell on the day. Great effort by all.

Serious athletes lined up with fun runners for the Beaverbrooks 10k for Trinity and really made it a day to remember, despite the wet and windy weather. A field of over 3,000 runners raced along the Promenade in the less than ideal conditions, despite which winner Stuart Robinson finished in a very good 31:39 and first woman home was Lisa Ainslie in 39:53.

David Burns, a valued Trinity Hospice supporter, was first home in the wheelchair race.

Fundraising manager Linzi Young commented: “We must say a huge thank you to everyone who took part, and to everyone who helped on the day. Our youngest runners were just 11 years old, our oldest in their 80s. The fun runners were an absolute delight with their colourful and quirky costumes.

“Beaverbrooks have built the Blackpool 10K into a massive regional event over the past 30 years, and this year handed over the reins to us at Trinity. It was a huge responsibility but will be a very welcome fundraising boost for us.

“It was lovely to have the event started by our President, Jimmy Armfield, and to see so many people raising sponsorship for Trinity and Brian House. Thank you to everyone who contributed, either as a runner or as a helper on the day – we couldn’t have done it without you.”

There were heroes of all shapes and sizes, from Mutant Ninja Turtles, to Danger Mouse and Cat Woman, though for some people their heroes were closer to home – a much loved mum, dad or grandma.

Schools from across the Fylde Coast have been supporting Children’s Hospice Week and representatives from several called in to see their artwork, which is now displayed in the Hospice Chapel – where it covers an entire wall!

Several schools and businesses also helped by contributing bags of unwanted clothing, books and bric a brac, to be sold in Trinity’s Fylde Coast shops.

Lisa Martin, Community Fundraiser said: “It has been lovely to have the support and enthusiasm of so many local schools. Their artwork has made a fantastic display and the children who visited us were very pleased to see their efforts on show.

“Children’s Hospice Week is all about raising the profile of the children’s hospice movement, and this year has had the support of HRH the Duchess of Cambridge, who did her very first video message this week in support of children’s hospices.”

It was only right that his very first outing was to visit Healthpoint to hand over his formal adoption papers.

Natalie Bromley, Trinity’s Corporate fundraiser said: “We absolutely love Hospuss, who has been our mascot for many years, and Healthpoint’s kind donation has made it possible for us to retire our old Hospuss, who had attended literally hundreds of events, and bring in a brand new version.

“As a fundraiser, we know Hospuss will be a huge success. He will be representing both Trinity Hospice and Brian House, and already has his own electronic bookings diary which is filling up fast, so expect to see him here, there and everywhere in the coming months!”

Trinity Hospice is supporting Dying Matters Week in May when representatives from all over the Fylde Coast will be part of the area’s biggest ever educational event on end of life planning and care. Organised as part of national Dying Matters Week, the event at the de Vere hotel, Blackpool, will be held on Wednesday May 15.

It has been arranged by the Fylde Coast End of Life Awareness Group, which draws its members from Fylde and Wyre CCG, the local NHS, Trinity Hospice, Macmillan and others. The aim is to get the community thinking and talking about planning for end of life and telling loved ones what their wishes are. Topics include making a will, funeral plans and organ donation. Speakers will give their own personal – and sometimes very moving – stories.

Delegates will come from all over Blackpool, Fylde and Wyre, including representatives from charities, local councillors, nursing home staff , churches, schools and patient participation groups. Places at the event must be booked in advance, but if you would like more details email karen.newman@trinityhospice.co.uk.

As part of Dying Matters Week, Trinity Hospice has organised a drop-in session at its Red Bank Road charity shop in Bispham on Saturday May 18. If you want information about Dying Matters and the practical steps you can take to plan ahead, just call in anytime between 11am and 3pm.

There were dogs of every shape and size, some in superhero suits and all of them helping to raise money for Brian House Children’s Hospice. A huge thank you to the 250 pooches who made Bark in the Park such a massive success.

The sunny weather brought dogs and owners out in force and it was fantastic to see them all enjoying the atmosphere of our 5km sponsored walk, trying the agility course, meeting other owners or just sitting in the sun and sharing an ice cream.

There were giant Newfoundlands and tiny Yorkies, athletic hounds, pretty pugs and a few poodles. Some dressed as superheroes, which is the theme of Children’s Hospice Week.

Though Bark in the Park isn’t a race, first home was Amy Bennett with her dog Bella and they were followed by a colourful procession of pooches and owners, who then had the chance to watch an agility demonstration and visit a variety of doggy-themed stalls.

Teenager Michael Willacy started the event on behalf of Brian House, and his dog Oscar completed the course. It was great to see so many members of staff and Trinity volunteers taking part.

Collette Goodwin, event organiser said: “It was lovely to see so many participants. The weather was perfect and we hope to have raised about £7,500 for Brian House. A huge thank you to everyone who took part and to the local businesses who supported us.”

Improvements to patient care and privacy, enhanced support for patients with dementia and neurological conditions and some much needed refurbishment to part of Trinity Hospice and Brian House Children’s Hospice are now possible thanks to a successful grant application to the Department of Health.

The Department has announced that Trinity Hospice and Brian House have won cash for a series of capital improvements – though the grant of £283,000 is less than we asked for, it is a welcome boost at this challenging financial time.

The in-patient building is now over 25 years old and is starting to struggle to meet the current needs of the community. Patients are more complex and need more space for their care to be provided safely. Families want to be able to spend quality time with a loved one in a private space, sometimes wanting to stay overnight with them in the same room. The money will go some way in helping the hospice make its environment more appropriate for patients with dementia, with improved lighting and better visual cues to help them remain as independent as they can be.

David Houston, Trinity Chief Executive said: “It has been an anxious wait because this funding is highly competitive and was well oversubscribed. We had to prioritise elements of the bid, and we are happy to hear that we have been successful in securing about two thirds of what we asked for. However, our need for continuing local support remains as high as ever as demand for our service grows.

“One-off capital expenditure of this nature is extremely difficult for us to cover, because the vast majority of money we receive goes on the day to day cost of patient care.

“We would have found it very difficult to embark on improvements on this scale without help from the Department of Health. Our thanks go to all the partners who backed our application with letters of support.

“Hospices from all over the country were competing for a share of the same pot of cash, so we knew it was unlikely that they would meet the full need, but this grant is very good news indeed and together with continued local support we hope to be able to continue to care for people on the Fylde Coast.”
